Tackle a new knitting technique with this series of workshops!

Choose a workshop or take all four, build skills in this swatching mini series so you can tackle a sweater, shawl, or hat this fall!

Week 1 8/6: Mosaic Knitting

A great intro to colorwork. There are no floats or colors to carry across each row, instead you use slip stitches to create color patterns in your knitting. Learn to slip stitches and play with color as you knit a swatch in this session. You can apply your skills to the very popular Shift patterns from Andrea Mowry and others.

Week 2 8/13: Stranded Colorwork

Learn to read a chart, different ways to hold your yarns, dominant colors and what it means, and float tension. We will cast on a swatch and practice colorwork. After class you will have the skills and knowledge to apply to a larger colorwork project like a hat or sweater.

Week 3 8/20: Brioche

The ever popular, ultra squishy brioche stitch is a favorite of mine in knitting. It gives a raised rib effect and is luscious for shawls and hats. Work on a single color swatch to master this stitch…barking, burping, what does it mean?! We will review two color brioche, increases, and decreases. You will have the skills you need to cast on a larger brioche project!

Week 4 8/27: Steeking

A four letter word in the knitting world. It’s really not as bad or scary as you think! Cutting your knitting is exhilarating and will help you tackle that larger cardigan project you’ve been dreaming of. You will come to class with a swatch already knit and we will review reinforcement techniques. You will reinforce your swatch with crochet or felting and we will steek (cut) your knitting. If there is time we will review picking up stitches along the steek. You’ll have the emotional support needed to cut those stitches so you can tackle a larger project like a cardigan!

Dates: Tuesdays in August (8/6, 8/13, 8/20, 8/27)

Time: 6:30-8p

Location:  Connected Stitches Yarn & Fiber Shop (10 W Main Street Dryden, NY 13053)

Each class is 1.5 hours long. You will arrive having completed the homework (if there is any), and we will spend the class time diving into each special topic.

All yarn is supplied for colorwork, mosaic, and brioche. You must supply your own knitting needles or purchase them from the shop. Because homework is necessary for the steeking class, you will supply your own (100% wool) yarn or pick up yarn from Connected Stitches before class to complete your homework.

Prerequisites: knitting, purling, knitting in the round are helpful. This is not for absolute beginners. Participants should be comfortable with basic knitting skills.

Techniques you will learn: dependent on the week(s) you join!
