Band Weaving on a Backstrap Loom

Learn the ancient textile-making technique of backstrap weaving using simple and portable materials to create a patterned band. We will cover warping and threading a backstrap loom using a rigid heddle, as well as creating and reading an alternating pick up pattern to make a short band. This project is beginner-friendly.

Teacher:  Laura Ballard

Laura Ballard is a maker of many things- weavings, batiks, relief prints, applique pillows, 3 little girls… Currently she teaches rigid heddle weaving workshops at The Clay School’s Art Room Studio and in another life, before children, she taught weaving, felting, dyeing and batik at the elementary and middle school level. Laura loves to find ways to make historic forms of weaving accessible and relevant to her students.

Supplies Needed: Please bring 2 contrasting colors of cotton or smooth wool yarn, if you have some in your stash (it does not have to be a full skein). You may bring a third color of wool yarn if you would like the option to add another pattern element to your weaving. Catona from Connected Stitches is a cost effective cotton that works great with the looms.

Supplies Provided:

  • Warping pegs, backstrap looms and rigid heddles, scrap yarn. Backstrap loom kits will be available for purchase
Previous Skills Needed: None, this project is adaptable for all levels.
